Acronis Backup and Recovery 11 Server for Windows vs Paragon Hard Disk Manager 12 Premium
Acronis and Paragon both have been at forefront of backup and data recovery technologies. Difference between the two, stems from the different philosophies they follow.
Acronis’ philosophy is geared towards the corporation. The ABR 11.5 offers a central command point of view where every aspect of backup over networks are performed and controlled. For example, for every backup, there is a disaster recovery plan that is generated for the network administrator to follow. Let us look at it in some detail.
Acronis Backup and Recovery 11.5 Server for Windows Review
Backup Procedure
Disk image backups or snapshots cover the entire server. The backups are at super fast speeds and at the same time, avoiding unused blocks and files. The backup can be applied at granular levels, meaning specific files and folders can be chosen. With the bare-metal feature, recovery is possible on any hardware within minutes.
Backups are performed without taking the server offline. Applications are notified during backup using VSS to maintain consistency.
Backup Destinations
The number of destinations covers a wide variety of storage devices. An additional feature of Cloud destination is a feature that is new in the market. With Cloud coverage, a new layer of protection for extra security is added. Other devices such as local drives, Network Attached Storage, Storage Area Network, ftp servers and optical devices and tapes are supported as well.
Scheduling
The Advanced backup feature schedules timings for each machine: at different times, and for different data types. Schedules can be set to trigger by events such as a user log on or a computer shut down.
Disaster Recovery
The Disaster Recovery features are just as powerful as the backup features. The Bare-metal recovery kicks in case of hard drive failure. The recovery can be done on any hardware. The Acronis Universal Restore can recover to any Windows or Linux machine or on a Virtual Machine. The Active Restore feature allows normal machine use while recovery is in process.
Data Recovery
Data recovery is a seamless process allowing users to pick and chose the files and folders to recover. Using the Windows Explorer, users can mount storage devices to view and search the directory tree.
Microsoft Exchange Server
The 2010, 2007, and 2003 versions are fully supported. From recovery of a single mailbox to entire servers ABR 11.5 covers a full range of features for backing up or restoring the Exchange Server. Restores can also be made to a live Exchange server.
Acronis Backup and Recovery 11.5 Pros and Cons

Paragon Hard Disk Manager 12 Premium interface
Paragon Hard Disk Manager 12 Premium Review
The HDM 12 Premium offers a Partitioning Engine, which gives the user complete power over how to handle them. File systems conversions are allowed without formatting with an additional feature to run a complete surface test. Partitions can be created, deleted, split and merged. Free space on one partition, can be allocated to another, giving the user the freedom to optimize the use of storage space. Conversions from NTFS file systems to Apple HFS systems are also possible.
Backup
Support for Incremental and Differential backup operations is present including a backup and restore wizard. HDM 12 supports all known techniques of backups to any backup destinations, such as mounted/un-mounted partitions, CDs, DVDS, Blu Rays and FTP/SFTP servers.
Restore
HDM 12 offers selective restores such as recovering files or folders. Recovery to dissimilar hardware is fully functional with required drivers for the new machine automatically installed during recovery. This makes the new machine or the drive bootable as well. Recoveries support Linux, DOS and WinPE.
Data Wiping
HDM 12 offers 10 different data wiping algorithms for security purposes. The algorithms supported are Dod, US Navy, British, German, Australian and other standards. There is a Custom and a Paragon algorithm to clean your hard drives of all sensitive data.
Pros
Data wiping feature is extensive
Partition handling is super
Supports Windows 8
Cons
Lacks Management Features
No Cloud coverage
More of a utility software
Who Wins?
Both products offer the basics of backup and restore processes. Acronis has more functionality for the enterprise making it a sophisticated solution: for example, it offers a Wake-on-LAN option that switches on a machine scheduled for backup. The Paragon HDM 12 lacks such features that put Acronis ahead.
